Like in the United States, motor sports or car racing is very popular in Britain. Formula One is the top form of motor racing, it is complex and uses very advanced technology. Britain has a rich history in the sport, and has had many great motor racing drivers and champions.
Sir Jackie Stewart won the formula one world championship three times in 1969, 1971 and 1973. After retiring Jackie went on to start his own grand prix racing team which has now become the Jaguar team. Other famous British drivers include Graham Hill who won the championship in 1962 and 1968, his son Damon Hill became World Champion in 1996. Mike Hawthorn was formula one world champion in 1958, Jim Clark in 1963 and 1965, John Surtees in 1964, James Hunt in 1976 and Nigel Mansell in 1992.
Graham Hill is the only driver to win the Triple Crown: the Formula One World Championship, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500. Jim Clark also won a famous victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 1965.
John Surtees is the only man to win World Campionships on both two wheels and four, which he did by age 30. Surtees won the motorcycle World Championships in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960.
British drivers have won 12 World Championships since 1950, more than any other country.
There have been two American World Champions, Phil Hill in 1961 and Mario Andretti in 1978. Andretti drove the extraordinarily successful British Lotus 79 car. The Team Lotus car owed it's success to aerodynamic ground-effect which sucked the car to the track allowing it to go much faster round corners.
You can see Formula One for yourself in the United States at the US Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In grand prix racing drivers compete to be the World Champion and the teams compete to be the Constructors Champion. Since 1958 there have been 44 Constructors Championships and 32 have been won by British teams. Famous British teams that have won include Cooper, Lotus, BRM, Tyrrell, McLaren and Williams.
The people in charge of motor sport are the FIA, Federation Internationale de l'Automobile. The FIA have a list of formula one teams and drivers.
