Wimbledon, one of the major tournaments in men’s and women’s professional tennis, is played every year in June. It is the only major tennis tournament still played on grass.
The first Lawn Tennis Championship was held in Wimbledon in 1877. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club moved to its present ground, home of the famous Centre Court we all see on television each year, in 1922. Centre Court holds over 13,000 spectators. There were 57 British competitors at Wimbledon in 2007.
During the two weeks of Wimbledon over 12 tons of salmon, 23 tons of strawberries and 285,000 cups of tea are supplied to people watching the tennis, together with 12,500 bottles of champagne!
You can follow the progress of the British players at the next Grand Slam tennis championship on the calendar; the US Open at Flushing, New York.
Britain's current top male players are Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.
