The University of East Anglia (UEA) is an innovative and diverse institution for post-graduate study and research. UEA was the first institution to introduce the distinctive interdisciplinary concept of Environmental Sciences. The University provides a vibrant research environment for their 9,000 undergraduate and 4,000 post-graduate students with a research income of £25.9 million ($50.5 million).
Post-graduate research students comprise a large percentage of the student body. The Ph.D. program admits the highest quality students, and collaboration between research projects and members of the staff is strongly encouraged. Many Ph.D. students participate in research seminars, workshops, away-days, and doctoral colloquia to enhance their research experience.
Much of scientific research activities at the University of East Anglia are in collaboration with the Norwich Research Park, which was formed to create a professional link between the University, the John Innes Center and the Institute of Food Research at Norwich Laboratory. The Norwich Research Park, comprised of over 1,500 science faculty and 500 post-graduate students, is one of Europe’s largest centers for studying plant, microbial and food sciences, health, agriculture and the environment. The Norwich Research Park is also partnered with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, which provides UEA medical students with a new and innovative facility to conduct their research.
Most recently, UEA researchers in association with the Children’s Hospital in Boston achieved great strides in breast cancer research. This international collaboration helped explore the racial disparities in deaths associated with breast cancer. Researchers at East Anglia now hope to further investigate their findings and determine if changes in medical practices will help to reverse this trend in breast cancer mortality.
