Established in 1907, Imperial College in South Kensington is an internationally ranked undergraduate and postgraduate research institute for the physical sciences. It merged the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines. An additional seven mergers over the next 93 years helped the college become the formidable research institution it is today. This year, Imperial College celebrates the 100th year anniversary of the signing of its charter. As the Imperial motto states, the institution is "where science is leading".
Imperial College has 20 postgraduate programs including an impressive list of varied physical science degrees. There is even a science communication, translation and language department. For undergraduates, there are 15 departments in mathematics, engineering, physics and other physical sciences.
Imperial College has 11,888 undergraduate and postgraduate students who are taught and supported by 1,077 academic staff and 1,490 research staff. Within this distinguished group, 52 are Royal Society Fellows, 56 are Royal Academy of Engineering Fellows, two are Fields Medalists and four are Crafoord Prize winners. Imperial College is highly selective when it comes to recruiting prospective students. This past year, it accepted just 2,360 out of 13,417 undergraduate applicants and 2,334 out of 12,370 postgraduate applicants.
One of Imperial’s most recent achievements is its partnership with the University of Manchester to launch the first nuclear doctorate center. Other achievements include: the development of new ways to reduce the use and suffering of animals in medical testing; a series of simple public health policies that would be able to effectively contain the spread of smallpox if it were released into a population; and the joining of a global initiative to develop alternative, advanced technologies to address problems relating to energy and the environment.
