Oxford University is a global leader for excellence in research, science and innovation. The University attracts a student body from all around the world with over 3,000 academic staff and 3,000 postgraduate students involved in diverse areas of research. As the leading UK institution in the number of academics working in world-class research departments, Oxford continues the tradition of providing students with knowledge, skills, and opportunities.
Oxford scientists and researchers are involved in a variety of initiatives, most recently, with the exploration of methods of cancer prevention. Through the modification of the molecule RNA during cell division, researchers at Oxford have discovered beneficial implications that may deter the growth of tumor causing cancerous cells.
In addition to their extensive collaborations with academic and medical partners, Oxford University is well known for commercializing its research initiatives. Isis Innovation, the University's technology transfer company, provides researchers with commercial advice and financial aid for patent applications. Founded in 1998, Isis Innovation leads the UK in technology transfers and successfully files approximately one new patent per week.
Many innovative products and technologies have been developed after significant research at Oxford, including the creation of a diagnostic test to assess the degree of nicotine dependence to help people stop smoking. Some 40 other Oxford spin-off companies have become extremely successful in industry, including Oxford Instruments, a global leader in advanced instrumentation.
