Scotland is the northern part of the island of Britain and is situated between latitude 54°38’ and 60°51’ north and longitude1°45’ and 6°14’ west. It covers a total area of 78,783 square kilometers of which 77,080 is land area and 1,703 square kilometers is inland water. The mainland coast is 3,906 kilometers long and there are 790 islands of which 697 are uninhabited. Scotland is bounded west and north by the Atlantic Ocean and by the North Sea to the east. In the south the border with England stretches for 60 miles, roughly along the line of the Cheviot Hills. Scotland has three natural divisions. The fertile plains of the Lowlands in the south melt gently into the industrial heartland of central Scotland which in turn gives way to the fast rivers, quiet lochs and picturesque mountains of the Highlands in the north. Further information on Scotland’s geography can be found in Scotland in Profile.
