Figures issued by the International Monetary Fund show that GDP per head is now higher in the UK than in any of the other major European economies. Research from Barclays Bank plc indicates that the gap in performance is set to widen steadily, so that within the next twenty years and despite its smaller population, the UK will overtake Germany to become the largest economy in Europe.
The UK attracted the most foreign investment in Europe last year and inward investment rose by 14 per cent, according to figures out in July 2004. Britain has a world class science and engineering base. The UK has won 46 Nobel prizes in the last 50 years, including three last year (2003). The UK is second only to the US in terms of the volume and influence of its scientific publications.
