"Our job is to help people travel, not stop them... The challenge for us is how we meet people's need and wish to do so whilst meeting our environmental aims." Alistair Darling, UK Transport Secretary July 20th 2004
A growing population and increased prosperity are expected to lead to more travel in the UK and more demand for goods from all over the world. The British government recently published a White Paper that looks at factors that will shape travel over the next 30 years.
The plans include:
- an increase in government funding for road and rail transport, while controlling costs,
- a bigger role for local and regional authorities in deciding transport priorities,
- extra funding to support London's Olympic bid,
- proposals to help manage bus services - which provide two thirds of all public transport journeys,
- support for steps to cut CO2 emissions and the use of new technology to make more efficient use of roads through local road pricing schemes.
